If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned but have not love, I gain nothing. We are encouraged to give alms to sacrifice for others. Is it just to boost? No.
We are to do it out of love. Sharing with others gives them great joy, but if you are just doing it for doing sake and you don’t do it out of love and care and compassion, and love for your neighbor, then you are just a clashing cymbal, a noisy gong. That is what makes the difference. Do it for love of God, for love of neighbor. We heard of Saint Francis. He became a saint, not because he gave away but because he loved. Look at our Lord Himself, the crucifixion, the dead. Why? Because He loved us.

Love Bears All Things
