I don’t know if you’re like me, but every time I see a baby, I only want to hold and squeeze it because it’s so cute. Maybe that makes me weird. What this is called is the positive feedback loop. When we hold or care for an infant child, it releases oxytocin. It’s written in our biology that babies are cute. The gospel for this Sunday is intense, but it is all about the preciousness of children, and the Catholic Church says that children are the supreme good. Jesus talks about some fierce things. He talks about divorce. He talks about adultery. He talks about human beings being made male and female, and all of these things that Jesus is talking about are rooted in children being the supreme gift.
In our culture, children are seen as a curse, an accident, or a problem. Jesus reminds us in the gospel that children are the supreme gift from the Lord, and let’s not forget that. This is Spirit Juice. Peace.

Tony Stark feels betrayed by Captain America. Even though Captain America doesn’t do anything against Tony Stark, Tony Stark still feels betrayed, and it’s justified. The gospel for this Sunday. Jesus says, “Amen, I say to you, what you did not…

Imitate Jesus
I am so excited. Our Newman Center just got a new statue of St. Joseph. It was handcrafted in Germany, it is absolutely beautiful, and my favorite thing about it is that the baby Jesus, the Lord of the universe, is holding the world, but is being held by his dad, St. Joseph, and the baby Jesus is safe and resting in his dad’s arms. St. Joseph was a good father, and he must have learned how to be a…

Do Nothing Out of Vainglory
What do all of these characters have in common? Gaston, Mr. Darcy, Regina George, Gilderoy Lockhart. These characters do precisely the opposite of what St. Paul asks of us. Do nothing out of selfishness and vainglory. St. Thomas Aquinas says that vainglory is the excessive need for the approval of others. All of these characters are vainglorious. They don’t have pride…
