At the end of Marvel’s “Infinity War,” Thanos sits alone on a planet alone. And you may think that it’s paradise, but it’s hell. In this Sunday’s gospel, Jesus says clearly, “What does it profit one if he gains the whole world “but loses his life? “Loses his soul?” Thanos gets everything he wants. He receives the Gauntlet. He gets the Infinity Stones. He wins the war.
He is alone. He is isolated. That’s precisely what hell is. When we fall into sin and shame, all we want to do is be alone. All we want to do is isolate. But we are made for love. We are made to love. And you’re made by a God who is absolute love. Embrace that call to love. If you are tempted to sin in any way, isolate, and be alone, reject that because you are made for love. Reject isolation and embrace your call to love.

Yes To God
So, very often in the Old Testament, this is what happens. A prophet speaks to a group of people, calling them to turn back to the Lord. And what does the group of people do? They say no! They reject God, and bad things happen. They dig a hole that they cannot get out of. But the fantastic thing about the first reading for this Sunday is that Jonah, a prophet, speaks to the people of Nineveh, calling them to repent and…

The Transfiguration
In “Thor: Ragnarok,” Bruce Banner and the Hulk, they are fighting against each other. They’re the same person, but they need to be integrated better. But then you see in the movie, “Endgame,” Bruce Banner and the Hulk are truly one. They are no longer fighting against each other. They are integrated well. Bruce Banner is the Hulk, and the Hulk is…

The Lowest Seat
This Sunday’s gospel is all about partying. I think Pope Francis should write an encyclical about how to party like a Catholic. This gospel is so good because Jesus talks about parties. We are called, not just in parties, but in life, to take the lowest seat so that we can be raised up. When you enter into a church, what is the lowest seat…
