We live in a culture of life hacks. We can make anything more effortless and more efficient. There are life hacks for finding flights online, cooking eggs, and dating relationships. And when it comes to your dating relationship, please do not use any hacks. We can make things so easy and comfortable. Do we need the Lord?
There will be a moment in our lives, and maybe you have already experienced it, where you are helpless. That is why the gospel is so beautiful for this Sunday. This woman comes to Jesus, crying, “Lord, help me.” She has no life hacks. She cannot fix the problem. She, in all humility, asks Jesus for help. And when it comes to our lives, you may be experiencing helplessness right now. The beauty of being a Christian is that we can unite our helplessness to Jesus’s helplessness on the cross so that he can help us.

Do nothing out of selfishness and vainglory. St. Thomas Aquinas says that vainglory is the excessive need for the approval of others. All of these characters are vainglorious. They don’t have pride…
