What do all of these characters have in common? Gaston, Mr. Darcy, Regina George, Gilderoy Lockhart. These characters do precisely the opposite of what St. Paul asks of us. Do nothing out of selfishness and vainglory. St. Thomas Aquinas says that vainglory is the excessive need for the approval of others.
All of these characters are vainglorious. They don’t have pride. They don’t want to be the best. All they want is social status. All they want is the approval of others. As Christians, we fall into vainglory, and the way to fight against vainglory is to do what the saints did, which is to be more concerned with how God sees us. We don’t need the approval of others. We need God to speak the words of truth to our hearts: you are made good, seen, loved, and known, which can never be taken away from you. So fight against vainglory and let God tell you who you are.

God’s Law and Barnacles
Okay, so let’s talk about barnacles. And I’m not talking about what SpongeBob says when he’s upset. But barnacles attach themselves to a boat or a large creature like a whale and are foreign entities. They’re not supposed to be there. In the gospel for this Sunday, Jesus is very clear about us, and how we love to create our human laws and put them in God’s law, but when we do that, we attach barnacles to…

Voice of God
Okay, guys, you have to check out this photo. This photo was taken in 1974 of a little boy named Harold. Harold could not hear anything, so doctors placed a hearing aid in his ear, which is the reaction of Harold hearing sound for the first time. And this picture is so moving, but what we hear in the gospel for this Sunday is even more moving and more incredible. Jesus Christ takes a deaf man away from the crowd…

Start Small
Okay, so if you’ve ever been to the jungle or the rainforest or are just Indiana Jones, you may have used a mosquito net before. The crazy thing about mosquito nets is that the holes of the mosquito net are bigger than the mosquito’s body. A mosquito could crawl through but can’t because it doesn’t know how to fold its wings and crawl through a hole bigger than its body. In this Sunday’s…
