I was just in the Gulf of Mexico, went to the beach, and saw something crazy. I saw a father placing his 2-year-old son on the edge of the water, and he sat there and let his son walk forward. The son took one step into the ocean, looked back at his dad, smiled, turned back, and took one more step forward, and he kept doing this. This little 2-year-old boy felt safe amid a vast, powerful, dangerous ocean because he knew his father was present. Today, we celebrate the baptism of the Lord. The Father chooses Jesus and claims that Jesus is the son and that he is safe with him. So, this is what I want to do this new year. I want to be like that little boy who takes a step forward, looks back, and knows that I have a father who is keeping me safe and who takes away all of my anxiety. This is great news, and this is Spirit Juice. Peace.

Yes To God
So, very often in the Old Testament, this is what happens. A prophet speaks to a group of people, calling them to turn back to the Lord. And what does the group of people do? They say no! They reject God, and bad things happen. They dig a hole that they cannot get out of. But the fantastic thing about the first reading for this Sunday is that Jonah, a prophet, speaks to the people of Nineveh, calling them to repent and…

God is a Just God
The Gospel for this Sunday is all about the judge. You know who is a bad judge? Scarecrow from “The Dark Knight Rises.” Scarecrow is one of the villains who presides over a kangaroo court, condemning the aristocracy to death. And he gives them two options, either death or exile. And both of those options lead to death…

The Lord Keeps Us Safe
So, have you ever seen those videos of police dogs that attack the guy wearing the crazy, weird-looking suit? Sometimes I feel like that’s my life. There are many times when I feel attacked, and I feel like I’m out of control, and I don’t feel safe. In the gospel for this Sunday, the apostles experienced the same thing. The storm is attacking them, and they are not safe. But what does Jesus do…
